Linear Variable Displacement Transformers (LVDTs) are sensors used for measurement displacement and position. They accurately measure the movement of the armature (the sliding part) relative to the stationary body of the sensor.

LVDT Accessories

The strength of the LVDT principle is that there is no electrical contact across the transducer position sensing element. This provides clean data, infinite resolution and long life, making it one of the most robust and reliable position sensors on the market. LVDT sensors are extremely adaptive and ideal for use in extreme environments, capable of operating submerged in sea water, in temperatures up to 1100°F, and at pressures up to 30,000psi. LVDT sensors can also survive in radioactive environments and are unaffected by vibration.

A key to obtaining the best performance from an LVDT is that both the body and the armature of the unit be securely mounted to the application. Any ‘slop’ or play in the mounting would be magnified in the displacement measurement results. Long stroke LVDTs in particular should be supported along the entire length of the device to prevent any sag or deflection of the sensor body. We suggest using at least 2 per transducer, and 3 or 4 for longer stroke units.

Stellar Technology’s LVDT mounting blocks are constructed of glass filled nylon and provide secure placement and firm hold in temperatures from -4 to 230°F. For more hostile environments Stellar Technology can provide metal mounting blocks. Various tips are also available for the armature ends, as well as rod-end bearings for captive guided models.
