Linear Variable Displacement Transformers (LVDTs) are sensors used for measurement of displacement and position. They make an accurate measurement of the movement of the armature (the sliding part) relative to the stationary body of the sensor.

Long Stroke LVDT

The strength of the LVDT principle is that there is no electrical contact across the transducer position-sensing element. This provides clean data, infinite resolution and long life, making it one of the most robust and reliable position sensors available.

LVDTs are used in gauging and monitoring of assembly processes, valve position monitoring, resistance weld stroke, oil and well drilling applications, in the mining industry, and in pavement studies. LVDT sensors can be incorporated onto almost any application thanks to a variety of mounting options, including a non-contact frictionless configuration with nothing that ever wears out.

Long stroke LVDT sensors from Stellar Technology are available in stroke ranges from 0.5” up to 18.5” and come with free unguided, captive guided, or captive guided spring return armatures to meet the needs of the application. Stellar Technology LVDT sensors are fully welded, constructed of stainless steel, and are available in AC or DC versions. The accuracy of these units ranges from 0.25% to 0.5%FS, with non-linearity of 1% to 0.10%.

Stellar Technology LVDT sensors are extremely adaptive and ideal for use in extreme environments. They are capable of operating submerged in sea water, in temperatures up to 1100°F, and at pressures up to 30,000psi. LVDT sensors can also survive in radioactive environments and are unaffected by vibration.

These units are shipped with a 10 point calibration record (5 points each, tension and compression) traceable to NIST which are standard.
